The everywhere/anytime/any platform game has now invaded the social-networking world. That's right—if you're lucky enough to work for one of the four companies that hasn't banned Facebook on the company servers yet, you can play Bejeweled there.
Bejeweled Blitz (currently in beta) may be the best time-wasting app ever added to the addictive Facebook beast—because it has a built-in timer. Every game is limited to just one minute (GO!), meaning you can squeeze in a complete game in less time than it takes to reach the stale coffee made by Bob in accounting approximately 4 years ago.
The action is essentially the same as every other Bejeweled game: match three pretty jewels, watch them disappear. Match four to create a bomb. Match 5 and a worm hole opens, ready to suck in every jewel of the same type in a single, swift shift of your mouse hand. (The ensuing explosion from one such worm hole inspired my son's lament that I had just destroyed a college education's worth of diamonds!)

Still with me? Good. Because the good news is, you don't have to earn the big numbers on your own. This is Facebook, remember? Just sucker—er, share the fun—with your friends, and their scores will get tacked on to yours. Oh, and your score is always doubled. So even if you don't have any friends (or they don't play Bejeweled), you only need to score 50,000 to be entered for the free game.
Of course, it's not about the prizes that none of us will ever win. It's about the mother-flippin' trash talk. You and your friends appear in a convenient right-hand column, latest score displayed proudly. Every time you top someone, you have the option to send special Bejeweled trash talk (I couldn't make this stuff up) to the person you just served. As for me, I'm resisting the urge to screw with someone who used to work for a gaming company… and came up with a score of just 1,400!
Dude, my cat almost got a better score by walking on my keyboard.
The flipside of this is that if your friend-cum-rival beats your score, you may waste an evening or two (in one minute increments) trying to topple his or her score. Leaderboards reset weekly, so be prepared to reclaim your bragging rights every Tuesday.
Bring it, peeps! Oh, and if you're one of those cats who gets 500,000 just by sneezing, send me a friend request, 'K?

Thanks for putting this together - this is a great article for those of us with our heads buried in the keyboard all day.
