I'm a big Puzzle Quest fan (most notably Marvel Puzzle Quest on iOS, which I still play daily). The console versions haven't always been the best (especially MPQ). When I learned that Puzzle Quest 3 was free to play on Xbox, I avoided it for months - concerned it would be unplayable without significant monetary investment. As it turns out, it's a fresh spin on an old dynamic, and so far no need (or even pitch) for me to plunk down any cash (I am the king of white-knuckling through games that try the hard upsell).
Battles give you multiple turns with some new strategy elements, like creating a full row to skip your opponent's turn or a column to remove a status effect. It took a few battles for me to start to get the hang of it, and I accidentally turned on arachnophobia mode (it's only real-world spiders that give me the heebie jeebies).
In the end, I had fun and will play more for sure (might eventually tip out the developers by buying a little something for the game):
