The PlayStation Store has a handful of free goodies for your PS3 this week (everyone has one now, right?!):
While looking for the official details on the Sony Web site (I finally had to run downstairs and jot them on a pad of paper while logged into my PS3), I stumbled across this little PR nugget: "PlayStation fans: feel free to throw up your arms in unanimous rejoicing. Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America announced in a press release that PS3 sales have increased by more than 135% at the company's top five retailers."
Uh, unaminous rejoicing? That's got to be some of the worst PR speak ever (and I should know, as a marketing copywriter myself). That's like saying, "The long dark winter has ended, now that we're only getting beaten 3-to-1 by Nintendo." C'mon, just give us the facts - we'll decide if we want to celebrate something as ridiculous as a company that we don't even work for dropping its price to realize a notable (though not spectacular) uptick in sales. It reminds me of a so-called benefit I once saw posted on a Microsoft marketing Web site for Mac Office: "Full of useful goodness." Oh boy, let me just go get my credit card. And my party hat...
UPDATE: I just noticed that this "news" item on the Sony site is credited to IGN's Ryan Clements, a so-called independent gaming news source. That actually makes it worse than if a PR drone had written it...
- Heavenly Sword demo and two wallpapers
- Actual gameplay footage from Metal Gear Solid 4, plus videos for Haze and Resident Evil 5 (the same one Xbox Live Marketplace just posted),
- Movie trailers for Across the Universe, 30 Days of Night, August Rush and Vacancy
