This week, Best Buy is offering the Heroes Season 1 set on HD-DVD free if you buy the $180 HD-DVD player add-on for the Xbox 360. There's also an updated mail-in offer for 5 free HD-DVD discs, good if you purchase a Toshiba or Microsoft player before the end of February 2008. You still have to choose from a prescribed list, but free is free. Finally, there's a rumor that Toshiba is working on a special version of the Xbox 360 with the HD-DVD player fully integrated. Microsoft has resisted this approach in the past, mainly because it sets the expectation that games could take advantage of the enhanced storage capabilities - which might improve some games but would further fragment the console's already fractured installed base (hard drive/no hard drive, HDMI/no HDMI, likely to fail/less likely to fail)...UPDATE: The Best Buy deal just got even better. The chain is apparently honoring a separate ad that grants you two free HD-DVD titles (your choice, as long as they're $34.99 or less) with the 360 HD-DVD drive. If you already purchased it this week, you can take your receipt in and request the additional two movies.
