Blog - Beating the Endless Setlist on Rock Band

With the sequel right around the corner, GrrlGotGame and I decided to finally take on the 58-song Endless Setlist in Rock Band this Labor Day. The task took us about 5 hours of actual gameplay, but we started the endeavor mid-afternoon while our 5-year-old was still awake, pausing the game for dinner and to put our son to bed and then finishing up at a reasonable 10:40 p.m.

I know that I'm overdue to post my Penny Arcade Expo notes (which will have to wait one more day) but one thing I can share now is that there will be NO PAUSING if you want a similar achievement in Rock Band 2. The achievement for that 84-song continuous playlist is named "Bladder of Steel," though they might have more aptly called it "Guys Who Can Pee In a Cup" because not many people can go an estimated 8 hours without a bathroom break unless they prepare for the challenge by becoming dangerously dehydrated (at the risk of passing out). But I digress.

Despite our efforts to improve our skills over the past year, we were only confident enough to take on the setlist on Medium. Such is the lot of the busy gamer, who can't play and practice every day. But even so, it wasn't a complete cakewalk. With GrrlGotGame on vocals and me on guitar, here are our highlights:

  • Song 9. "Blood Doll": I failed and died, costing us 15,000 fans. On the second try, I made it through.
  • 12. "Maps": Grrl got 100% on vocals.
  • 14. "Brainpower": I failed again on guitar, but Grrl saved me so we completed the song on the first try.
  • 22. "Learn to Fly": I got 100% on guitar.
  • 26. "The Hand That Feeds": Grrl got 100%.
  • 38. "Go With the Flow": Grrl got 100%.
  • 39. "Dani California": Grrl got 100%.
  • 41. "Don't Fear the Reaper": Grrl got 100%.
  • 44. "Vasoline": Grrl got 100%.
  • 45. "Detroit Rock City": I finally got another 100%.
  • 48. "Cherub Rock": I got my third and final 100%.
  • 50. "Enter Sandman": My nemesis! Even with a well-timed break right before, I failed the intro and lost us another 15,000 fans. On the second try, I saved myself and got through the song without fail.
  • 55. "Flirting With Disaster": Grrl got her seventh and final 100%.
On Medium, the Endless Setlist is worth only 10 lousy achievement points - but it still felt good to finally play through it. It was totally worth the experience, one we probably won't repeat in Rock Band 2 for obvious reasons. But considering our brief time playing the game at PAX, we expect to fully enjoy the new songs and expanded band play starting Sept. 15.
