Free Stuff Friday - Painkiller and Battle Out of Hell

PainkillerPainkiller: Battle Out of Hell
This week's Free Stuff Friday is a treat for first-person shooter fans with PCs: Painkiller and its expansion, Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell. The series evokes the classic id franchises (Doom and Quake) with a story that's set in Purgatory and Hell, features massive bosses and, between the main game and expansion, includes 34 levels and several multiplayer modes.

It was also one of the first Penny Arcade webcomic projects (i.e., where they started getting paid to promote the games they liked). More recently, it was positively reviewed by Zero Punctuation - and that guy doesn't like anything!

Here's how to enter:

Simply post a comment on this page. Say whatever is on your mind as long as it's not an ad or profane. Be sure to read the Sweepstakes Rules to ensure you are eligible to win and don't get disqualified by double-posting or forgetting to provide an e-mail address.

You may also want to white list this domain; I've had several would-be winners lose out because they never responded to their prize notification! If you use TypeKey/TypePad, be sure your e-mail address will be shared. No e-mail address, no prize. (Don't worry, no one else will see it - and I'll only use it to contact you if you win.)

Note that unless you're an authenticated poster who has been active on the site and marked as trusted, your comment will NOT appear immediately. It will go into a queue for me to approve, which I'll do several times a day (except the first weekend, where comments may not be approved until sometime late on Sunday). Do NOT double-post. We'll extend the entry period for this until 5:01 p.m. Pacific Time on Thursday, May 21 to ensure you have plenty of time to enter and verify your entry was posted.

We also give away unannounced Instant Win prizes. Here are a few tips since it can happen at any time. 1) Follow me on Twitter. Before I post the next Free Stuff Bonus - Instant Win, I'll give you a fair warning tweet. 2) Subscribe to our RSS feed and set it to check for updates frequently.

We continue to stock up on cool goodies for Free Stuff Friday - and will keep doing so as long as there's enough response, even if we continue to lose money on the site. So tell your friends about this! Hey, if we get bigger, so will the prizes that YOU could win! Check back each Friday to see what's next.

Mentioning Doom makes me want to play it.

2.

Gotta love those Shurikens and Lightning!

3.

Never heard of it but it sounds good

4.

Cool - always wanted to check those out.

5.

Seems interesting. Did they re-use a lot of the doom models? Some of those seemed like they came straight out of hell...

6.

Yahtzee has gotten me into some pretty good games, hope he doesn't let me down on this one.

7.

More games!

8.

Looks pretty interesting.

9.

The cover for some reason kinda reminds me of Hellgate:london

10.

I think i'll have to enter this one. Never heard of the game cause im not much of a pc gamer aside from RTS games but this new 24" wide screen hd monitor is begging for something to be played on it.

11.

If Yahtzee likes it, it must be good!

12.

Sounds cool and my computer can run it.

13.

I've heard good things about this game before. Not the deepest of shooters, but who cares?

14.

Yahtzee is hilarious. Never played these games myself, but I heard good things about them.

15.

I still remember trying out the demo for this when it first came out. Loved the stake gun and it definitely reminded me of Serious Sam (which I played quite heavily). Never got around to trying out the full game. Going to have to find a copy for cheap if I don't get it for free.

16.

After watching the ZP of this, it's tough not to want it.

17.

I played this game because of the Yatzee review and did i love it.

Pure fun!

18.

I never did get around to playing this, but I always wanted to especially since I saw there is another game in the works, I like to play games in order.

Thanks for the contest:)

19.

34 levels of Doom like goodness - sounds great too me :)

20.

Man, that Zero Punctuation review made me really want to play this game. I want to use the gun that shoots shurikens and lightning.

21.

Ah, Yes Painkiller I've heard a lot about this game and have heard some people say it was more like the true Sequel to Doom 2 in terms of gameplay. Though I've been really hooked to Doom 3 as of late and I can't explain why and since I heard this game was sorta familiar in a sense with the theme might as well post and see if I'm lucky :D.

22.

I forgot this game existed, I remember thinking it looked cool but my pc couldn't play it

23.

I been wanting to play this, reminds me of the Serious Sam games. Looks like fun!

24.

Wow, a game my pc can actually handle!

25.

I thought Yahtzee made a living hating games. I guess that's not entirely true.

26.

Ahhh.. The good ole' days of Doom & Quake
I can't forget all those warnings people were giving, saying that Blood & Guts violence was going to ruin our minds
Predicting it's the work of Satan & he's going to get our soul.
What did they know.. LoL..

Ok,.. I got my Hooded Robe.. now where did I put that Goat's Head. it's time for the meeting..

27.

This would be pretty nice. I've tried looking in stores for Painkiller, but never been able to find it. It seems like all the stores I go to only carry the expansion for it. Buh.

28.

Painkiller and the addon are great old school style shooters. No need for a lofty plot, just tons of baddies to kill (and some huger bosses).

29.

They set him up, now hes going to take them down

30.

Man, how can you go wrong with a FPS in Doom style? Pick me, pick me!

31.

I've been wanting to try this out, the game seems pretty awesome.

32.

Yahtzee approved? Awesome. Good luck, all.

33.

Man, this sounds good. Yahtzee is way to nit picky, but if he says a game is good- its good.

34.

sounds ok...

35.

I'm running off of an IBM PC (model 5150) Do you think my computer can run this?

36.

Ooh, run-and-gun gameplay? A far cry from realistic games like Call of Duty today. Should be fun!

37.

I've always kind of wanted this game, but never enough to actually go out and buy it over something else. I guess now is my chance to own it.

38.

I remember Painkiller. that game sounded totally wicked. Always wanted to play it.

39.

I need to get back into PC gaming.

40.

I love a good FPS

41.

Sweet. Looks a lot like Serious Sam. Just shoot at anything and everything that comes along.

42.

Hmm...who doesn't love an fps game. I WANT IT =D

43.

If yahtzee says its good, it must be an excellent game.

44.

This game looks like it has some potential

45.

This game looks pretty nifty!

46.

Seems interesting

47.

Woah! Thats before he got his fancy intro sequence!

48.

So nice of you to do this, thanks!

49.

I like Snoopy!

50.

Always wanted to try these games, thanks for the contest!

51.

always wanted to try this game

52.

I think my pc might actually be able to play this.

53.

This is one of the ones I missed out on, this would be great to win!

54.

I actually know a dude that looks nearly identical to that guy. Creepy!

55.

Good times.. an old skool FPS - no story, no plot twists - just good ol fashioned kill everything that moves and shoot them again when they're down just to make sure.

Me wants it now... Please!

56.

The Yahtzee review for this is hilarious.

57.

I love watching Yahtzee videos. It must be good if he actually reviewed it well.

58.

Always wanted to give this a shot! :)
