Act Fast! - EA to shut down even more online games

ea-logo[1] It seems like just a matter of days since EA shut down online support for a bunch of its games. Oh wait, it was.

Now EA is back at it with the next wave of games to lose online play on March 16 (less than a month away) and April 15:

March 16:

  • PC: Lord of the Rings: Conquest and Mercenaries 2
  • PS3: Def Jam: Icon, The Godfather, Lord of the Rings: Conquest and The Simpsons
  • PSP: Need for Speed: Carbon and Need for Speed: ProStreet
  • Xbox 360: Def Jam: Icon, The Godfather, Lord of the Rings: Conquest and The Simpsons

April 15

  • PS2: Burnout 3

In addition, the April 15 shutdown of Xbox Live for original Xbox consoles will take out some additional titles. Well, all original Xbox games will be offline only at that point, but you might want to squeeze in some more sessions of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, Burnout 3 and Madden NFL '09 while you can…

I was actually thinking of getting LOTR:Conquest. It only came out last Christmas and in a game like that online is everything. Since Battlefront II for the original Xbox is ALSO being discontinued it was the only game in that vein available. So much for that.

yep this is the problem with letting EA run their own servers. I've never been the biggest fan of putting everything in digital-only cloud-like formats, but at least if it was the consoles controlling the servers you can count on the big three to maintain them for the life of the console. Of course then you look at XBL for XBOX going down and maybe we should all just game on PCs where we can make our own servers.
