The v3.4 update to the PlayStation 3 firmware is now available, and it's your key to getting the pay-to-play PlayStation Plus subscription service (including an Automatic Game Patcher, early access to demos, bonuses and discounts) and other features. Incidentally, you do NOT get a 3-month PlayStation Plus free trial. When Sony said at E3 that they'd give everyone a free 3 months, they meant with a $50 1-year paid subscription.
Either way, you'll want to download the PS3 patch right away or you'll be blocked from accessing the PlayStation Store until you do.
Here's what's new (that is actually free!):
- Video Editor: Edit video on your PS3 and upload them to YouTube and Facebook.
- Photo Gallery: View and upload pictures on Facebook and Picasa, or share them with PlayStation Network friends.
- Ratings: Rate the content you buy from the PlayStation Store.
- Auto Shutdown: Your console will shutdown automatically after 2 hours of inactivity.
- Friends List: View trophy levels.
