Apple finally launched its long promised update to iPad which adds feature parity with iPhone. There are also some potential benefits to updating your iPhone with it as well.
For iPad, new features in iOS 4.2 include:
- Multitasking including background audio streaming (for apps that support it) and fast-app switching
- Game Center
- Folders
- Unified Mail Inbox with threaded messages
- Hardware switch no longer locks orientation but mutes the device like with the iPhone (software lock button replaces it)
- Ping social network support and TV show rentals via iTunes app
Both iPhone and iPad get:
- AirPrint - lets you send documents to a wireless printer on your network
- AirPlay - if you have Apple TV, you can stream videos to it or send audio to Airport Express speakers
In addition, according to reports, the operating system runs faster on 3G iPhones (which have been dog slow since the move to iOS 4). We were unable to test this since we're having a blizzard in Seattle and cannot risk the several hour update required when a power outage is highly likely...
