Too busy to be bothered with April Fool's Day? We were swamped ourselves, and even skipped making our own prank story (archive of past years) in favor of Busy Gamer Podcast 61.
Here's a quick round-up of the best of what you missed:
- Gaming site Destructoid handwrote their news for the day and even accepted FAX'd and phone'd in comments to keep the scrawl going (sample story at right).
- Blizzard introduced Crabby the Dungeon Helper for World of Warcraft, basically a riff on Clippy from Microsoft Office. "It looks like you're getting ready to enter a dungeon."
- ArenaNet announced for Guild Wars 2 the grenade-happy Commando character profession (alongside necromancers and rangers). Slogan: "If it bleeds, I can kill it."
- NPR reported on a new eye surgery technique would eliminate the need to wear 3D glasses ever again. Wow, that might actually sell me on a 3D TV! (Not really.)
- TouchArcade reviewed the free Netflix app for iPhone as though it were a game, and faulted it accordingly. Great read!
Sony renamed Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One to "Copernicus Qwark's Awesomely Epic 3D Adventure Through Time & Space co-starring, but not important in any way, Ratchet & Clank."- TwistedPixel unveiled its "controller" for the Kinect marionette shooter The Gunstringer: a pine dowel rod from Home Depot.
- Gmail introduced Gmail Motion, a Kinect-style interface for reading your email.
- ThinkGeek introduced several new "products," a few of which might actually be feasible: Angry Birds Pork Rinds, Star Wars Lightsaber Popsicles, Playmobil Apple Store Playset, Edible Gummy iPhone Case and the Minecraft USB Desktop Nether Portal.
- Harmonix revealed on its forums that it traded its CEO and co-founder Alex Rigopulos to GameStop for $40 in store credit.
- Sega introduced new challenges to the Super Monkey Ball series with Super Monkey Cube featuring real-time, turn-based RPG elements and... a cube to do away with all that "rolling around and junk."
- Star Wars: The Old Republic will feature Shyriiwook localization, aka Wookiee dubbed translations (sample clips on the site).
- Ninja Bee claimed that loading A World of Keflings and triggering an emote (with the D-Pad) will unlock A World of Deathlings combat mode. though this didn't seem to work for me.
- IGN released a trailer for a Harry Potter TV spinoff, The Aurors done in the style of a traditional crime action drama.
