Fallout: New Vegas is our favorite Fallout, probably because developer Obsidian made it instead of Bethesda. They infused it with a great story, improved mechanics and game dynamics, and a memorable soundtrack. The only thing missing so far from The Outer Worlds is the soundtrack (which frankly just would not fit here).
And there are new things, like an emphasis on humor that is generally lacking from New Vegas (as fit the tone for that game). There's also a story reason for the VATS-esque time dilation, which helps make this game seem less of a Fallout knockoff and more its own thing.
Overall, I'm impressed and I'm only about 37 minutes in. Take a look and see if this is the sort of place you want to get lost in for the next several months (or possibly years - I'm still chipping away at New Vegas):
