News Flash - Sony 'Next Generation Portable' details

Sony Next Generation PortableAfter months of leaks, rumors and speculation, Sony officially revealed its Next Generation Portable (or NGP for short). That's just the codename - as with the price, we'll have to wait for an official name sometime between now and its holiday 2011 launch in Japan. Yeah, it's also not clear when other locales will get it.

Here is what we do know about the NGP:

  • 5-inch OLED touchscreen
  • Rear touchpad
  • Dual analog sticks
  • Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth and GPS support
  • Six-axis motion sensing and three-axis electronic compass
  • Front and rear cameras
  • Two microphones
  • Games will be sold on flash-memory cards in addition to being downloadable
  • Backward compatible with PSP games (presumably not UMD versions though)
  • Games in development include NGP versions of Call of Duty, Hot Shots Golf, Hustle Kings, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance, Metal Gear Solid 4, Monster Hunter Portable, Uncharted, WipeOut and Yakuza 4

With all of that hardware, it's likely that the NGP will make the $250 pricetag on the Nintendo 3DS look positively reasonable. We also suspect that you'll have some extra time to save up for one unless you import it from Japan at launch...

Hopefully this will be better than the original

I love the dual analog sticks, finally! This thing has pretty much everything packed in on it, who wouldn't want one? I'm not sure how well it will compete with the 3ds, but I would definitely prefer the NGP personally.
