As cat lovers who also enjoy hidden object games, Hidden Cats in New York seemed like a safe bet (also, we've enjoyed similar games like A Building Full of Cats and A Castle Full of Cats from the same publisher).
It's a little more Where's Waldo than Artifex Mundi, but there are lots of cool nooks and crannies in the game. Normal mode just has your standard "find all the cats" with sections colored in as you complete them. Advanced mode has random placements, special cats, and people to find plus you can unlock bonus puzzles.
It sounds complicated but it's good fun, and you get a real taste for it in the video. There's even a Ghostbusters kitty:
