We really loved the first Alan Wake (listen to our audio review). We don't always beat games but we beat that one, and enjoyed the hell out of it. I recently started the remaster/remake and decided to give Alan Wake II a try.
It's... dark. The first game was mostly set during night, so it was dark in that way but it never came off as sinister. This is closer to the Hannibal TV series with maybe a little Twin Peaks - you start playing as a naked old dude, there's a gruesome murder, and then you investigate it. There's even a version of Lector's mind palace where you assemble and review clues in a wooden lodge room.
So far, I don't love this but I'm intrigued enough to see where it's going:
